Threads of Curiosity

2022

This project centres on how curiosity about your environment can enhance creativity and improve mental well-being. The inspiration for this project began during a walk I took along the Scottish coastline and through a woodland area. As I walked, I paid close attention to everything around me—the shapes, colours, and patterns. I noticed how everything seemed to fit together, such as the ripples in the sand and the patterns in the wood. To capture these discoveries, I utilised various tools to create both detailed drawings and more spontaneous sketches. To challenge myself further, I decided to transform these observations into knitted pieces, employing my skills in both Domestic and Dubied knitting. I also experimented with hand dyeing processes, attempting to emulate the soft gradients of colour I observed in the landscape. The flowing ripples, in particular, were a recurring pattern that inspired my knitted pieces. In today’s technology-driven world, it is easy to overlook the value of being in the natural environment. My project emphasizes the importance of curiosity in nature, highlighting its benefits for understanding, empathy, and appreciation. By noticing shapes, colours, patterns, and textures, individuals can improve their observation skills and forge a deeper connection with their surroundings. This exploration opens up the opportunity to recognize repeating patterns in various contexts—not only in nature but also in the broader world. Ultimately, my project delves into the significance of exploring the outdoors, the benefits of being curious within that space, and the importance of patterns in shaping an interconnected world.
